Welcome to the Sierra Ski Patrol Membership Page

Joining Sierra Ski Patrol

Thank you for your interest in the National Ski Patrol and
joining our patrol!

Ski patrolling as a volunteer or paid staff can be a rewarding career knowing that we help our guest at their worst moment to be better as best as we can.  With that comes hundreds of hours of training and seasonal commitment.  We welcome those who want to be ski patrollers for the love of it.  Ski patrolling also requires a lot of movement (traversing, walking, etc) on the hill.  For this, we are looking for able skiers.  Acceptance of riders may be considered on special cases and qualifications. If you are a rider, please feel free to contact us and/or submit your application.  We will review your application and may contact you further on your qualification(s).  Typically, during the candidate year, you are required to be on the hill a minimum of 16 days.  Please consider your avaiability and priorities (i.e., family, job, hobbies, friends, etc.) before signing up for the candidate program.

Please visit nsp.org for more information on being a ski patroller.

With that said, if yoiu are willing and able, the following list give you the first few steps to get the process rolling:

1)  Submit the application which you can access by the link at the bottom.

2)  Demonstrate your skiing ability.  This is done during the season prior to your candidate year.  Once we accept your application, we will contact you to arrange for the skiing test.  Our expectation is that you are able to ski all levels of terrain in various conditions comfortably and under control.  We will also ask you to do certain skiing maneuvers such as short-medium-large radius-turns, falling leaf, kick turns, walking uphill by side stepping and herringbone, etc.

3) Take the Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) class.  The classes are offered during the summer/fall.  Typically, there are classes in the South Bay (pending), East Bay, Sacramento, and North Lake Tahoe in the Eastern Sierra Region.  However, you may take the OEC course from anywhere in the country.  To register for a class, you must join the National Ski Patrol [nsp.org] and pay their membership dues.  The process requires you to be on the primary roster of a ski resort.  We are Sierra at Tahoe Ski Patrol (SSP).

Go to the Eastern Sierra Region website for the OEC course offerings and details:

https://www.easternsierraregion.org/programs/outdoor-emergency-care-oec

4) Once we receive your application, you will be put on our communication list.  We will keep you posted of any updates.

We are looking forward to your application and meeting you.  If you have any questions, feel free to drop me an email.
